DIGITAL AFRICAN NETWORK FOR CERVICAL CANCER ELIMINATION
DANCCE
Cervical cancer (CxCa) is an easily preventable form of cancer. If detected early, a woman diagnosed with cervical cancer has a great chance of survival. Since the HPV virus is the cause of cervical cancer in 99% of cases, it is possible to vaccinate against HPV and thereby eliminate cervical cancer as a major public health threat in Africa. With digital advancements, there are great opportunities to really speed up the fight against cancer and to connect and align efforts on CxCa elimination.
Cervical Cancer elimination is a major concern for many African countries and a priority for WHO Afro. Our initiative aims to map and coordinate efforts to avoid duplication, facilitate resource sharing and knowledge building that will bring an end to late diagnosis and unnecessary suffering.
Quick facts
- Although breast cancer is most common among women in Africa, cervical cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer.
- Women living with HIV are up to four times at higher risk to develop CxCa, it is therefore important that information and screening is part of HIV services.
- Research suggests that vaccination against the HPV virus may be as effective among adult women as young women to prevent CxCa.
- In many countries, CxCa is not part of the national health insurance/plan, rendering screening a luxury for many. That is why policy must be an enabler for elimination to succeed.
